What the heck is Kinesiology?
A lot of people ask us this question, it’s not as well known as other health care professions. We are a regulated health profession and you can find Kinesiologists at work in many areas of health care, including private practise as movement experts and clinicians.
As clinical Kinesiologists, we assess how your body moves to identify any issues that may be causing pain or increasing your risk of injury. For example, if you come in with a referral from your doctor because of chronic knee pain, we may look at how you walk, stand up from a seated position, climb stairs, or balance. If we notice movements that aren’t optimal, we provide targeted exercises to improve them. With the right guidance, these exercises can reduce pain and help you move with greater strength, confidence, and ease, so you can get out to do the activities you enjoy!
Not only does exercise help with improving movements and reducing pain, but also with other conditions/diseases. The Public Health Agency of Canada found that “Physical activity has been shown to reduce the risk of over 25 chronic conditions.” Those include coronary heart disease, diabetes, certain types of cancer, high blood pressure, strokes, Alzheimer’s disease and certain mental health conditions. As experts in human movement and exercise science, Kinesiologist’s can help you develop, improve and sustain healthy exercise and physical activity habits to help prevent chronic disease.
